Ozzie Guillen is baseball's least respected manager, according to Men’s Journal survey
Ozzie Guillen has more or less kept himself muzzled since the big Fidel Castro controversy at the start of the season.
Or maybe it's just that the Miami Marlins manager set the bar for outrageous comments pretty high and not even the mouth of South Florida can top saying he loves a despot who ruined the lives of many people in his own team's fan base.
Yeah, one or the other.
At any rate, Guillen is back in the bad headlines on Tuesday, though it's not directly tied to his own doing. Guillen was overwhelmingly named as the least respected manager in a survey of 100 MLB players that will be published in the July issue of Men's Journal.
The top three looks like this:
1. Ozzie Guillen (Marlins), 36 percent
2. Bobby Valentine (Red Sox), 14 percent
3. Manny Acta (Indians), 5 percent
That Guillen tops the category of least respected managers is about as big a surprise as the same survey naming A.J. Pierzynski the most hated player in baseball or Todd Coffey being as the player in the worst shape. It's not exactly a shock to learn that players don't hold much respect for the guy who enjoys bragging about how much work he dumps on coach Joey Cora.
At the same time, the landslide victory is a little surprising given that Valentine is just as polarizing a figure. And what did Manny Acta ever do to anybody? The solace that all three men can take is that you really have to be around for awhile to engender any sort of negative feeling among the sport's populace. So there's that, I guess.
I'm also wondering what the results would have looked like if Tony La Russa were still managing.
Here's a small taste of the rest of the results. The issue hits newsstands on Friday.
